Send big files

March 11th, 2010 by MongoFiles

What do you do when the file you want to send doesn’t fit into your email?   Some email services like Gmail and Yahoo have a 10-MB limit, and, as we know, that is not much at all.  Some of the options people have used in the past required complex FTPs (file transfer protocols), setups, and incompatible settings on Macs and PCs to send big files.

Zipping or compressing a file used to really help.  It used to be that Excel files could be compressed by up to 98%.  This method worked for a long time.  Now, though, there are some very big files that will not fit no matter what you do. When you take photographs these files are already compressed, so the size really doesn’t change.  Cameras are now all 10 megapixels or above.  This creates really high quality photos, but just try fitting ten of those photos into an email.  The same thing happens when you try to send a home movie. It’s just impossible to fit into an email, or is it?

Actually there is a clever and simple way to send big files through the Internet that is both fast and free.  What you want is a site that allows you to upload big files through a Web browser.  Then you simply need to grab the link and paste it into your email.  It’s that easy!  Now you just need to find the best online file-sending software on the market.

free audio file hosting

March 11th, 2010 by MongoFiles

Almost every musician wants to be famous, and sharing music is part of the daily routine.  Not only do musicians create music  that they want others to hear, they need to share tracks with band members who are sometimes at a distance.  As the Internet has evolved to bring people together, musicians now can exchange, combine, add, and subtract their tracks without ever being in the same room or even country.  Using software like GarageBand for Mac, a musician can record his or her part, send the tracks digitally, and another musician can sync these tracks together.  Once a musician has created music that he or she wants to publish, the next step is to find a place to host the audio file.  This is where it’s important to pick the right solution.

When it comes to free audio file hosting, the most important thing to consider is your end goal.  If you simply want to send a track to a friend, then an email may be enough.  If you want to send more than 10megs, then you’ll have to get another solution.  Read the rest of this entry »

Megaupload alternative

March 11th, 2010 by MongoFiles

Megaupload claims to be the leading online storage and file delivery service.  Let’s take a deeper look into this online application and understand what makes it so popular, and some of the downfalls of this file exchange service.

Let’s first talk about the benefits of Megaupload. The biggest thing going for this service is that it is the most popular, and actually gives rewards for those that upload regularly.  The prizes include a one-month premium membership when you get 1000 reward points, 6-months premium service membership when you get 5000 reward points, and after 50,000 reward points, you receive 100 US dollars.  They will even pay you up to 10,000 dollars if you get more than 500,000 reward points.  Now we can’t comment too much on the legality of paying people for improper uploads that consist of copyrighted or illegally copied content, but we will say that most of the content uploaded is illegal.  Users get points depending on the value of the content posted, and this does infringe on many legal aspects that we don’t have too much time to get into.  On the positive side, it is relatively easy to use, and has a large Web-user base.

Now let’s talk about the negatives.  The first thing that will catch your attention is that it requires you to register before you get online storage, or even use the upload/download manager.  This product can use your personal information, such as your email address, and will post many ads relative to the content you upload.  The premium service is also rather costly.  One-month premium service is 9.99 euros and one-year premium membership is 59.99 euros.  This is rather expensive, and there are too many gimmicky options.  This is clearly a site that is not designed for professionals or individuals that want a simple, clean, and safe way to upload and share files.   If you are looking for a Megaupload alternative, Mongofiles definitely deserves a look.

Free mp3 file hosting

March 11th, 2010 by MongoFiles

What do you do when you need to share mp3 files and don’t have a server to host them on?  There are several free and paid mp3 file-hosting programs that you can download to your computer, allowing others to access the mp3 files that you are hosting.  With this comes a set of potential security problems that we will describe below.

The moment you install software on your computer, you have granted access to the outside world. Even if you have granted permission to only a few friends, the potential now exists that someone you don’t want on your computer can access personal information as well. Read the rest of this entry »
